Actually, we have actively discouraged it in at least some applications
at an internal-to-the-DNS and DNS software convention that really should
not be seen by users.

If my memory serves me correctly, RFC 1123 also stopped just short of
banning them entirely.  Perhaps it is time to bite the bullet or to
start thinking about an explicit "please go hunting for this name using
my personal rule set" convention that applications could provide if
desired.
